Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, is a state located in the north central, or upper midwest, region of the United States. The state's name is derived from the Dakota Sioux word for "sky-tinted water" which referred to the Minnesota River. It is a large state, ranked 12th in terms of size, and was originally the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. It is the northernmost state within the continental US.

Minnesota is bordered to the north by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba, to the east by Lake Superior and Wisconsin, to the south by Iowa, and to the west by North Dakota and South Dakota. Minnesota experiences extreme climates, both in terms of severe weather and in terms of temperature. Harsh winters often bring heavy snows with occasional blizzards. Summers can be hot and humid with frequent rainfall.

Minnesota has a diverse economy that includes finished products and services. Minnesota Location in USAgriculture, historically important to the state, remains a major part of the state's economy, with the primary products being corn and sugar beets. The state's abundant natural resources include forest products, iron ore, and coal.
